Emotional Affairs: Signs, Scripture and What to Do
Part of our guide: Healing After Infidelity
He says she's just a coworker, just a friend from church, just someone he talks to. But something in your spirit says it's more. Emotional affairs are real, and they can hurt as much as a physical one.
What is an emotional affair?
An emotional affair is a close, secretive bond with someone outside the marriage that takes the emotional intimacy that belongs to your spouse. It may never become physical, but it breaks trust and often leads there.
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
Common signs
- Secrecy: a locked phone, deleted messages, a new password.
- He shares personal struggles or marriage problems with her instead of you.
- He becomes defensive or angry when you ask about her.
- He compares you to her, or mentions her often, then suddenly stops.
- Extra time at work or online with no clear reason.
- A new emotional distance from you.
One sign alone doesn't prove an affair. Several together are worth a calm, honest conversation.
How to bring it up
- Pray first and pick a calm moment.
- Describe what you see, not what you assume: "I've noticed you text her late at night and close your phone when I walk in."
- Say how it affects you: "It makes me feel shut out and afraid."
- Ask for what you need: transparency and clear boundaries with her.
